Toys R Us, the nation-wide toy retailer struggling in recent years from relentless competition from Walmart, has launched its Christmas Savers Club, a throwback to depression-era tactics used by many retailers to build holiday sales. The plan is designed to help parents save for holiday toys, and to guarantee that they will spend those savings at Toys “R” Us.

The New Jersey-based retailer has reached back to the holiday savings clubs that became popular during the Depression for inspiration for its latest effort to build customer loyalty. It used to be that every neighborhood bank had a Christmas club savings program, which encouraged people to set aside a few dollars a week for holiday spending. Those programs began to lose popularity as credit and debit card use became more widespread.

“We’re a relatively old brand, and we’ve started to use components of nostalgia within our brand, so we’ve looked at things that people used to do. Christmas savers’ clubs were one of those things that people used a lot, especially in times when budgets were tight,” said Greg Ahearn, senior vice president for marketing and e-commerce for Toys “R” Us.

The recession created demand for programs like layaway and Christmas clubs, said Chris Byrne, toy consultant and toy trends researcher.

“Some moms started this all by themselves last year,” Byrne said. “They would open separate savings accounts” to make sure they had money for holiday toys, he said. Toys “R” Us, he said, is smart to tap into that consumer sentiment. “This is money that people can feel secure that they know that no matter what happens they’re going to be able to create the Christmas for their kids that they want to,” Byrne said, “That’s one of the things driving layaway and all this.”

The advantage of dedicated savings clubs, in the consumer’s mind, Byrne said, is that it makes them feel like the money won’t be spent on other necessities. “It’s not like I put it into the savings account and then the bathroom sink goes and there goes that money,” he said. The advantage for Toys “R” Us, he said, is that money saved through its plan will be spent at its stores. Cash refunds will not be allowed, except where required by law, the company said.

Kmart and Sears introduced a similar Christmas savings program last year.

As an incentive, Toys “R” Us will add a 3 percent bonus on the amount saved by Oct. 16, up to a maximum savings amount of $2,500. Customers who have saved the maximum amount would receive a $75 bonus.

“It gives consumers an opportunity to put money away, to budget themselves for Christmas, and to get paid a bonus for doing it,” said Ahearn. Participants will receive a Christmas Savers Card, similar to a gift card, and can add value at Toys “R” Us stores. The savings cards can be spent starting Oct. 31 at Toys “R” Us or Babies “R” Us stores.

The National Christmas Center will open a new exhibit on Saturday, July 10, 2010 featuring the Santa Claus Oath traveling display and photographs. The new exhibit will include information on Santa Claus portrayers of historical significance throughout the last century. This permanent exhibit will be donated to the National Christmas Center by the Santa Claus Oath Foundation.

Master of Ceremonies for the July 10, 2010 event will be Santa Dutch Schrap of Philadelphia. Santa Jerry Owens of New Albany, Indiana will represent the Santa Claus Oath Committee and Santa Jim Morrison of the National Christmas Center will cut the ribbon on the new exhibit.

As part of the ceremony, Santa Claus Oath videos will be available for viewing and the Santa Claus Oath book pages will be available for all Santas, Mrs. Clauses, Elves and Helpers to sign at the event. The pages will be added to the official Santa Claus Oath book. The Santa Claus Oath book along with other documents will be placed into a time capsule in November 2010 in Santa Claus, Indiana

The Santa Claus Oath document outlines eight principles that any portrayer of Santa Claus should follow. Created in April 2008 by Phillip L. Wenz, the Santa from Santa’s Village, the Oath was inspired by two legendary Santa Clauses, Jim Yellig of Santa Claus, Indiana, and Charles W. Howard of Albion, New York.

Since 2008 the Santa Claus Oath display has traveled to various Santa organizations throughout the world and has been presented at local and regional Santa Claus meetings. The Santa Claus Oath Foundation will also donate numerous historical pictures and stories for a look back on the people, places, and parades that helped shape the Santa Claus Legend.

“The Santa Claus Oath is a reminder to all who portray Santa of the ideals that Santa Claus stands for,” says Santa Jim Morrison. “We’re honored to have the Santa Claus Oath and these legendary Santas of the 20th Century become part of our museum!”

Many professional Santas will attend the ceremony representing their local and regional groups. The ceremony is part of the second annual Midsummer Yule Festival, an outdoor festival, held on-site at the National Christmas Center.

The New York Times is reporting that a musical version of the movie “Elf” is headed to Broadway:

A musical adaptation of the 2003 film “Elf,” which starred Will Ferrell as a human raised among Santa’s little helpers, will help kick off the holiday season on Broadway in November with a limited run at the Al Hirschfeld Theater through Christmas and New Year’s Day, according to three people with knowledge of the plans. Thomas Meehan (“Annie,” “The Producers”), who is writing the show’s book with Bob Martin (“The Drowsy Chaperone”), said in a telephone interview that “Elf the Musical” was in “very good shape, very fun shape” and was set to arrive at the Hirschfeld some time in November. The music is by Matthew Sklar and the lyrics by Chad Beguelin, who collaborated on the musical adaptation of the movie “The Wedding Singer.” Two theater executives, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss the show ahead of its official announcement, said that the director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw (“Drowsy Chaperone,” “All About Me”) would direct “Elf” and that the run was expected at this point to be limited, similar to recent holiday-timed shows on Broadway like “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” and “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”

Will Koch, owner of Holiday World, the family-oriented theme park, passed away Sunday at the age of 48 due to complications related to Type 1 diabetes. Since the 1997 closure of Nashville’s own Opryland theme park, Holiday World in nearby Santa Claus, Indiana has become a popular alternative, and worth every minute of the three-hour drive.

Koch took over the family business some twenty years ago, following in the footsteps of his father Bill and his grandfather Louis Koch, who founded what what would grow to become Holiday World back in 1946.

Pre-dating Disneyland by some nine years, Santa Claus Land–as it was initially called–originally featured a few small rides and celebrated all things Christmas. Over the years, the theme park grew and added more intricate rides and shows.

By the mid-80s, perhaps taking a cue from the classic movie Holiday Inn, the theme park changed its name to Holiday World and added rides and shows celebrating other holidays, including Halloween and Fourth of July.

Among the Halloween-themed rides was Frightful Falls, a log-flume ride. Santa’s former Arctic Circle, a round-up ride would eventually become Revolution in honor of the addition of Fourth of July.

By the 90’s Will Koch was firmly in place as the park’s owner. In 1993, he designed and opened Splashin’ Safari, which introduced a children’s water play area with animal-themed water slides, all located on Crocodile Isle. Visitors could also enjoy a leisurely boat ride down Congo River and two huge water slides. The following year, Koch added a wave pool.

To celebrate the park’s 50th season in 1995, Holiday World christened The Raven, a wooden roller coaster that was named the #1 roller coaster on the planet by Amusement Today magazine. For the park’s 55th anniversary, another breath-taking roller coaster, The Legend was opened for thrills and chills in 2000.

2006 saw the addition of a Thanksgiving section as well as upgrades to Spashin’ Safari. Among the additions, still another new coaster, The Voyage. That same year, Will Koch appeared on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report in a hilarious segment pitting Santa Claus against Indiana’s most famous resident, Abraham Lincoln.

A Tilt-a-Whirl appropriately named Turkey Whirl was added in 2007 to the Thanksgiving area. The following year, Kima Bay was added to Splashin’ Safari, Star Spangled Carousel was added to Fourth of July and Reindeer Games, a spring-ride was added to the children’s Christmas section.

Just last year, Pilgrims Plunge, which drops passengers some 131 feet, was introduced and became the world’s tallest water ride.

Anyone who’s seen the latest Holiday World commercials that feature Will and his Mom, Pat, knows that just this year, Holiday World & Spashin’ Safari added Wildebeest. In keeping with their recent history, Wildebeest is now the world’s longest water coaster, at 17110 feet in length.

According to the theme park’s official website, the park will remain open for regular business hours in order to serve patrons who have already traveled to the popular vacation destination.

People’s passion for holiday and seasonal decorating is moving outside. In 2009 Americans spent nearly 40 percent of their annual seasonal decorations budget on new outdoor decorations, up from only 22 percent back in 2004, according to a recently released report from Unity Marketing, Christmas and Seasonal Decorations Report 2010 UPDATE.

Overall sales of outdoor seasonal and holiday decorations rose 18.9 percent from 2008 to 2009, while sales of indoor decorations were off by 4 percent. This is based upon the results of a new survey among 548 seasonal decorations consumers completed early this year in order to capture purchases for the 2009 sales year. Throughout the first nine months of 2009, Unity Marketing found consumers held back on buying new holiday decorations. They didn’t start shopping for new decorations until the fourth quarter.

“For all 2009 holidays up until Halloween, consumer spending on seasonal decorations were off from 2008 levels. That all changed with Halloween, with spending for Halloween decorations rising over 18 percent from 2008 to 2009. Sales of Christmas decorations in 2009 rose more modestly, with much of that growth attributed to increased purchases of outdoor decorations,” explains Pam Danziger, president of Unity Marketing and lead researcher on the new seasonal decorations survey.

Danziger explains, “This study provides marketers and retailers the latest information about American’s seasonal decorating traditions and new purchases. While the seasonal decorations market is notoriously volatile with decorating trends going rapidly in and out of favor, for 2010 we see clear signs that Americans will invest more in seasonal decorations this year. Outside decorating will remain the focus this year, with consumers starting earlier to celebrate the Fourth of July, followed by new outside decorations to welcome in the fall holidays. For autumn decorators will emphasize natural floral accessories and nature themes throughout the inside and outside of the home. Halloween celebrations will go more sinister with a boost from the growing popularity of vampires and werewolves which will be popular themes for costumes and decorations.

“Assuming the economy continues to improve, Americans are likely to return to the stores to buy new Christmas decorations for their outdoor areas and especially their Christmas trees. This is likely to be a good year for marketers and retailers offering ready-lit Christmas trees which seemed too pricey during the recession. They also are likely to make the investment this year toward more energy-efficient lights to replace the old electricity-hogging models.”

Danziger concludes, “This research study shows that product innovation is key to marketing success. The latest consumer insights can guide marketers to uncover what consumers desire in new decorating fashion and design new product lines that will give today’s careful shopper a reason to buy.

“Insights in this report will also help marketers learn about new patterns in where people shop for decorations so that they can maximize the sales opportunity in each of the different retail channels. For example, marketers should have an Internet strategy in place for Christmas 2010 as the research found the Internet and non-store retailers are among the fastest growing retail category for these items.”

Most people don’t start thinking about Christmas in April. For Mariah Carey, though, now is as good a time as ever to prep for the holidays, and prep for her new 2010 album. Although it’s been over 15 years since her last Christmas album, released in 1994, Carey has apparently decided to get back in the studio with Jermaine Dupri, in hopes of finding that same magic that helped the ‘Merry Christmas’ album sell over 12 million copies.

News of the reunion between Dupri and Carey broke a few weeks ago, when the two engaged in a suggestive tweet exchange. The announcement came not long after Carey had decided to end work on her ‘Angel’s Advocate’ remix album, which pulled songs from her 2009 ‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.’

Although it’s still to early to speculate about what the inside of the still-untitled album might sound like, we do now have a better idea of what the outside might look like. As the BoomBox reported this week, Carey is currently shooting the album cover for her new album, with the help of renowned (and controversial) photographer David LaChappelle.

In an interview with The Times, the photographer said that the new album cover will feature a graffiti skyline, a “hideous” silver tree, and fake reindeer. As LaChappelle says, “Mariah wanted real ones. Flown from Nebraska. Can you imagine, real reindeer?”

The Santa Claus Church in Demre, TurkeyA Turkish tourism company will promote the Mediterranean home of St. Nicholas, better known as Santa Claus, to tourists in the United States, including promoting the area as a location for destination weddings.

Gülseren Özdemir, the general director of the Wedding City Antalya Company, said the firm has been organizing wedding ceremonies for foreigners at the Santa Claus Museum in Demre, a town in the province of Antalya.

The company will organize weddings for at least 25 couples within the scope of the 2nd International Santa Claus Wedding Festival this year, Özdemir said, noting that couples from the United States will get married there in ceremonies that incorporate Turkish traditions.

The 2nd International Santa Claus Wedding Festival will take place between Dec. 1 and 7.

Wedding City Antalya has been working with Elite Turkey Tour, which operates in the U.S. wedding-tourism sector, Özdemir said.

Hulya Aydoğan, owner of Elite Turkey Tour, said not many people in the United States know that Santa Claus lived in Anatolia, but added that U.S. tourists are willing to spend money to experience different cultures.

“If we get more support from Turkey, we can continue Santa Claus promotion under UNESCO,” she said. “We will send tourists from the U.S. to Turkey for weddings, anniversaries and birthdays.”

story_lrgimage_2010_04_R5963_Midtown_Petition_Against_Rockefeller_Christmas_TreWhat’s more green than a Christmas tree? Not cutting it down in the first place, says a pro-environment group petitioning Rockefeller Center to end its holiday tree-lighting ceremony.

The group, Save a Giant Tree, hopes to collect 10,000 signatures to persuade Rockefeller Center management to replace the tree with artwork fashioned from recycled materials.

“We want to see something that of course does justice to the holiday season — but it doesn’t have to be a dead tree,” said Jennifer Knox, who started the group last December when she saw a 70-year-old, 76-foot Norway spruce being trucked into Rockefeller Center.

“The act of cutting down a tree of that size is just ludicrous,” Knox said.

Instead of placing an old tree in the traditional spot above the skating rink, Knox said organizers could display a green sculpture comparable to Jeff Koons’s “Puppy” topiary, which was a popular hit when it went on exhibit at Rockefeller Center in 2000.

A light display, similar to those of Hong Kong and Madrid, could also celebrate the season without cutting down a tree, she said.

The group has so far collected 200 signatures.

While organizers listen to the concerns of environmental groups, the tree is the centerpiece of the season and a longstanding tradition, said Keith Douglas, senior director of sales and marketing at Rockefeller Center.

“There is thought that goes into it and we’re trying to be as sensitive as we possibly can,” Douglas said.

Organizers, who do not pay for the trees, look for Norway Spruces are older and in unusual circumstances, he said. Crews also re-forest homeowner’s yards after the trees are taken away.

Last year’s tree was donated by Connecticut homeowner Maria Corti, who was going to have to cut down the tree in her front yard because the roots were interfering with her septic system, Douglas said.

At the end of the last holiday season, the tree trunk was donated to Habitat for Humanity to be used as lumber in building a home for a Connecticut family, The New York Times reported.

Branches from the tree were turned into mulch and donated to the Central Park Zoo, Boy Scouts of America and other organizations.

In recent years, the event designers have switched to LED lights, and installed solar panels above 45 Rockefeller Center in order to power up the display off the New York City electrical grid.

“It really is the kickoff to the holiday season and we’re very proud of that,” Douglas said of the display.

The efforts to green the Christmas tree exhbit encourage Knox that an even bigger step is possible.

“Traditions change when the resources around them change,” she said.
